The European Innovation Council closes three 2026 Pathfinder Challenges on Tuesday 28 October at 17:00 Brussels time. Total budget: €96 million, split roughly equally across the three areas.
DeepRAP (Deep Reasoning, Abstraction and Planning): trustworthy cognitive AI for safety-critical applications, directly aligned with EU AI Act enforcement requirements.
BioAgeing (Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing): foundational biology and biotechnology to extend healthy lifespan.
NanoHarvest (Advanced Materials for Miniaturised Energy Harvesting): novel materials enabling autonomous micro-devices and IoT sensors without batteries.
Grants cover 100 percent of eligible costs, up to €4 million per project, with no repayment and no equity. No product required: Pathfinder funds visionary research at TRL 1-4. Minimum two independent entities from two different EU member states or associated countries.
WHY IT MATTERS
Non-dilutive research capital at this scale is open to spinouts -- with a closing window
Pathfinder is one of the few EIC instruments where a university spinout, a research consortium, or a pre-revenue deep-tech company can access non-dilutive capital at grant sizes that meaningfully fund a multi-year research programme. Unlike Accelerator, there is no pitch process and no equity component.
Success rate is approximately 4.6 percent -- competitive but real. A consortium that has been developing its application through the open phase should treat the remaining hours as a final quality pass. If you have not yet registered on the EU Funding and Tenders Portal, that process alone takes time.
For AI founders building safety-critical or reasoning systems, DeepRAP is the most directly relevant: it explicitly targets the gap between current model capabilities and trustworthy AI for high-stakes deployment.
