EIB and Deutsche Bank agree €560 million partnership for European space businesses
The European Investment Bank and Deutsche Bank on 30 October agreed a €560 million partnership to finance European space companies. The deal sits inside Space TechEU, the EIB's dedicated space financing programme, which is designed to mobilise an estimated €1.4 billion in total across commercial bank partners.
The mechanism is a lending model: Deutsche Bank receives long-term funding from the EIB and channels it to eligible space businesses investing in their next stage of growth. Eligible technologies span reusable launchers and spacecraft, advanced propulsion systems, satellite manufacturing, and Earth observation platforms. In-orbit service providers and supply-chain component makers are also in scope.
Around half of the €560 million is expected to land in Germany, with the remainder allocated across other EU member states. The partnership was announced at the ESA Space Investor Forum in Munich.
WHY IT MATTERS
Debt, not equity -- and the route to capital is now Deutsche Bank, not the EIB
For EU space companies, the structural point is the routing. Space TechEU works through commercial banks: eligible companies approach Deutsche Bank directly, not the EIB. The EIB provides long-term funding and absorbs part of the risk; Deutsche Bank handles the relationship and the lending decision.
The model keeps dilution low. Growth-stage space companies typically face a binary choice between expensive equity raises and EIB project finance. A Deutsche Bank credit facility backed by EIB funding sits between those options -- debt at scale, without surrendering equity.
The EIB Group also offers complementary instruments alongside the bank lending: venture debt, direct equity, and advisory services for companies that need a blended approach. For an EU space company at growth stage, this week's announcement opens a direct path to one of Europe's largest commercial banks with EIB risk-sharing behind it.
