The rules in full
- Where you must be based
- the EU, plus AL, AM, BA, FO, GE, IS, IL, MD, ME, MK, NO, RS, CH, TN, TR, UA, GB
Your company must be established or located in an EU Member State or a country EuroHPC lists as eligible (Horizon 2020 associated countries such as Norway, Switzerland, the UK, Israel, Türkiye and Ukraine). For JUPITER, the rule is Digital Europe or Horizon Europe association instead.
- Who can apply
- a startup, an SME, a mid-cap or a large company
The industrial innovation calls (Playground, Fast Lane, Large Scale) are for companies only. Universities, research institutes and public bodies apply through the separate AI for Science and Collaborative EU Projects call.
- Alone or with partners
- Alone
One company applies alone, with a named lead engineer (Principal Investigator) employed by it.
- Stage
- No set TRL
No TRL rule. You need a real AI training, fine-tuning or evaluation job that justifies supercomputer time.
- Also required
- Concrete AI workload
- What you get
- computing time or services
No cash. Playground gives a small entry allocation for 1 to 3 months; Fast Lane up to 50,000 GPU hours for 1 to 3 months; Large Scale more than 50,000 GPU hours for 3, 6 or 12 months (for example up to 4,644,864 GPU hours on MareNostrum 5 ACC).
- Funding rate
- Free of charge for eligible industrial innovation use
Conditions to check
- Free access is aimed at AI SMEs and startups doing innovation work. EuroHPC's own page says other industrial users may be sent to paid, pay-per-use access, so larger companies should confirm with the AI Factory first.
- Your lead engineer (Principal Investigator) must be employed by the company at submission and for at least 3 months after the allocation ends.
- You need a VAT number and a Participant Identification Code (PIC) from the EU Funding and Tenders Portal.
- The use must be civilian, comply with the EU AI Act, and the proposal must be in English.
- You must acknowledge EuroHPC in publications, file a final report within 3 months of the allocation ending, and take part in dissemination events. You keep ownership of your data and models.
Where applicants trip up
- Asking for cash or for production hosting: this gives GPU time and expert support only, not money or always-on inference.
- Picking a machine that is full: MareNostrum 5 ACC and JUPITER Booster were closed to Fast Lane, and MareNostrum and LUMI-G to new Large Scale allocations, when checked in October 2026.
- The workload cannot run on a shared HPC cluster (batch jobs, containers, multi-node GPUs), so it fails the technical assessment.
- Resubmitting work that already has a running EuroHPC allocation, or a lead engineer who already holds one in the same access mode: normally only one at a time is allowed.
Checked against these official sources on 18 October 2026. Each call can add its own conditions, so confirm in the call document before you apply.
